Romulus Courtney Hoskins (UCB)
Filtered photograph of transparent collage Stranded in Romulus, Michigan after missing a flight, I studied my temporary and foreign landscape. I tried to capture it in a collage of birefringent materials (an anti-static computer component bag and a cellophane string). Liquid crystals and birefringent materials are used extensively in the worlds of science and technology. By bending light waves at selective wavelengths, an artist is able to utilize these same materials to literally paint and sculpt with light. This is a true-color piece that has not been digitally altered. Rather, the materials have been placed between polarizing filters and photographed.
